Accusing the Narendra Modi government of pushing the country’s education system into the “Intensive Care Unit”, the Congress on Monday (July 6, 2026) said it would soon unveil an “Education Charter” based on consultations with students, teachers and parents across the country.

Addressing a press conference, Congress leader and NSUI in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar said Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had been interacting with students in different parts of the country to understand their concerns and prepare a roadmap for reforms. He said the exercise would culminate in a charter aimed at overhauling the education system.

Mr. Kumar also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and called for an inquiry into his alleged links with the paper leak mafia. He also sought a comprehensive reform of the examination and recruitment system, alleging that the Centre had weakened institutional safeguards by replacing earlier mechanisms with the National Testing Agency.

The Congress leader further called for a regular job calendar for youth and a fixed academic calendar for examinations and recruitment.

NSUI president Vinod Jakhar alleged that student union elections were being stifled across campuses to tighten the grip of “BJP-RSS affiliates”. He also questioned repeated extensions granted to the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University, and said the NSUI would launch campus-level organisational elections through an app-based system that would be “free, fair and transparent”.
