Amid moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of Uttarakhand, the weather office on Thursday (July 2, 2026) issued an alert for several districts including Dehradun.

Due to unceasing downpour, and falling debris and stones from hillsides, traffic movement has been affected on the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district and the Kedarnath Yatra route in Rudraprayag district.

Officials said for safety of pilgrims, the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on the Sonprayag-Munkatiya road in Rudraprayag has been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.

The meteorological centre has issued an “orange alert” for Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, and Bageshwar districts, cautioning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

A “yellow alert” for heavy rainfall at isolated places has been issued for Haridwar, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli districts.

According to the Dehradun Meteorological Centre, during the past 24 hours, Narendranagar received 110 mm of rain, Dhanaulti 100 mm, Khatima 85.5 mm, Jolly Grant 80.4 mm, Dehradun 79.6 mm, Mussoorie 77.8 mm, Laksar 73.5 mm, Banbasa 72 mm, Pantnagar 70.6 mm, Barkot 65 mm, Rudraprayag 64.5 mm, Jakholi 63 mm and Yamkeshwar 60 mm. Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Thursday (July 2, 2026) called the death of a man in a manhole in Mumbai a serious matter and said it amounted to “culpable homicide”.

Responding to the matter raised by a member, he asked the State government to place a detailed statement in the House on the incident before the day’s proceedings concluded.

“A man died after being swept into an open manhole amid heavy rains in the city on Thursday afternoon,” an official said. The incident occurred in the Chandivali area in the eastern suburbs, where waterlogging had apparently concealed the uncovered manhole.

BJP MLA Ameet Satam raised the incident in the Assembly and demanded that criminal action be initiated immediately against those responsible.

Mr. Satam told the House that the incident occurred on Khairani Road in the area during drainage work being carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. - PTI

National Highway Authority Of India (NHAI) has undertaken comprehensive measures to ensure safe, smooth and uninterrupted traffic movement on National Highways in Himachal Pradesh during monsoon.

“Vulnerable locations prone to landslips, slope failures, debris accumulation, flooding and other monsoon-related hazards have been identified, and preventive measures have been implemented on priority,” NHAI said in a statement issued here on Thursday (July 2, 2026).

The NHAI has carried out detailed surveys of vulnerable and landslip-prone stretches across the National Highway network in the State. “Based on these assessments, remedial works have been taken up at identified locations,” the statement said.

“Engineering interventions including hill protection works, slope stabilisation, retaining walls, improved drainage systems, anti-erosion measures and other safety works have been executed to enhance the resilience of highway infrastructure and minimise the impact of adverse weather conditions,” it added. - PTI

“Moderate to heavy rain lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh, disrupting normal life as 46 roads were closed to vehicular traffic across the State,” officials said on Thursday (July 2, 2026).

The Shimla Meteorological Centre issued an orange alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places from July 2 to July 5, except for July 3.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), 18 roads were closed in Kullu, 15 in Mandi, nine in Sirmaur and two each in Lahaul and Spiti and Una districts.

“A total of 181 electricity transformers and six water supply schemes were also affected due to torrential rain,” the SEOC said.

Poanta Sahib recorded 100.4 mm of rainfall since Wednesday evening (July 1, 2026), followed by Kasauli (86 mm), Dharampur (83.4 mm), Jatton Barrage (77 mm), Dhaulakuan (69 mm), Pachhad (60 mm), Rampur (53 mm), Una (50.4 mm), Nahan (38.3 mm), Palampur (37.8 mm) and Dharamshala (34.1 mm). “A man died after being swept into an open manhole in Mumbai amid heavy rains,” an official said on Thursday (July 2, 2026).

The incident occurred in the Chandivali area, where waterlogging apparently concealed the uncovered manhole.

“Fire brigade and civic disaster management teams conducted a search and operation and the man’s body was recovered on Thursday,” he said.

The Kishtwar district administration issued a weather advisory of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, flash floods and landslips till Sunday (July 5, 2026) in the region, urging people, particularly those living near riverbanks, to remain cautious and avoid vulnerable areas.

According to the advisory issued by the Office of the Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner, the area is likely to witness generally cloudy weather accompanied by spells of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms at many places, with a few areas experiencing heavy rainfall, brief intense showers and gusty winds.

The administration warned that prevailing weather conditions could trigger flash floods, landslips and mudslips in vulnerable locations.

“Residents, especially those living near waterbodies, streams and nullahs, have been advised to stay away from such areas and take all necessary precautions until weather conditions improve,” the advisory said.

The district administration has directed all line departments, including Revenue, Public Works Department, Mechanical Engineering, Power, Jal Shakti, Health and Medical Education, Irrigation and Flood Control, NHIDCL and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), to remain on high alert. - PTI

The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Delhi on Thursday (July 2, 2026), five days after its normal onset date of June 27, bringing widespread rain to several parts of the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said it is the first time since 2021 that monsoon has arrived in July.

Delhi welcomes the monsoon on July 2, 2026, with thunderstorms and rain forecasted, marking its first July arrival since 2021.

“The Southwest monsoon entered parts of Rajasthan on Thursday (July 2, 2026), seven days later than its normal onset date,” the India Meteorological Department said.

‘The monsoon has advanced into eastern parts of the State, with its northern limit currently passing through Tonk, Jaipur and Alwar,” according to the Meteorological Centre in Jaipur.

The IMD said the southwest monsoon on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) advanced into additional parts of Gujarat, the remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh, the entire Delhi region, most parts of Madhya Pradesh, large parts of Haryana and Punjab, and parts of Rajasthan.

The weather office said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance into more parts of Rajasthan over the next two to three days.

The department has forecast torrential rain in several districts of eastern and southeastern Rajasthan over the coming days.

It has also issued a heavy rainfall warning for several districts in eastern Rajasthan, with moderate to heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms likely at isolated places in the Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Bharatpur and Jaipur divisions on Thursday.

“Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated places in districts under the Kota division,” the IMD said. The monsoon is expected to remain active over the Jaipur, Bharatpur, Kota, Udaipur and Ajmer divisions during the next week, with widespread rainfall activity across the region.

In Karnataka’s Mangaluru, three members of a family, including two girls, were killed and three others were rescued after a rain-triggered landslide destroyed a house early morning.

The incident occurred in the Nagori area following heavy overnight rainfall that triggered a landslip, burying the house under a mound of earth. Preliminary findings indicated that a large mass of soil from the hill above the house gave way due to incessant rain, leading to the collapse of the structure. - PTI

Four people were killed in rain-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh as heavy monsoon showers in several parts of the hill State, including Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala, led to multiple road closures due to landslips, swollen rivers and disruptions in electricity supply.

“The Southwest monsoon, which arrived in Himachal on Tuesday (June 30, 2026), covered the entire State by Wednesday (July 1, 2026),” the weather office in Shimla said, as it issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places from July 2-6, except for July 4.

A woman hailing from Solan district was killed when a falling boulder hit her as she stepped out of her car on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway near Aut.

According to the State emergency operation centre, three deaths were reported from Kangra district, which included one death each due to electrocution and falling from height, on the first day of monsoon rains.

Incessant rain has created flood-like situations at Lanot and Phagdog villages in Chamba district, where falling debris from a mountain entered two houses, causing severe damages, including cracks on the walls.

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), a total of 35 roads, including 18 roads in Kullu, 11 in Mandi and two each in Lahaul-Spiti, Sirmaur and Una districts, were closed for vehicular traffic, and 127 electricity transformers were disrupted in the State. - PTI

Although the southwest monsoon began on a pleasant note in Kerala, with light spells of rain across the State and without any extreme or inclement weather, the opening month of the rainy season ended on a sombre note, with a 34% rainfall deficit. Further, the forecast for July has compounded the concerns of the farming community, with below-normal rainfall predicted across the State by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

A deficient June and July, which together contribute around 65% of Kerala’s annual southwest monsoon rainfall, are a clear indication of the possibility of early drought-like conditions unless the shortfall is offset by an intense revival of the monsoon in August or September.

He asked people to stay away from beaches and banks of rivers, and advised fishermen to not sail out for fishing in the sea.

Following the completion of the first month of the water year, the Idukki hydel power project — one of the main power projects in the State — is facing a critically low storage level of 23%. There is currently a storage deficit of over 43 feet in the reservoir compared to the previous year. The water year runs from June 1 to November 30.

According to data from the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) dam safety wing, the storage level on July 1 was 2,321.24 feet, compared to 2,364.18 feet (58%) on the same date last year. Notably, despite 30 days of monsoon rains, the dam’s water level rose by only 4.14 feet, a mere 3.54% increase in storage over the month.

The Western Railway informed on X that suburban services on its network were running normally, while commuters claimed some trains were running behind schedule.

As per BMC, the eastern suburbs received the highest average rainfall of 189 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m. on Thursday, followed by 172 mm in the island city and 165 mm in the western suburbs.

Among the highest rainfall readings, Santacruz SWM Workshop and the S Ward Office in Bhandup recorded 238.8 mm each, followed by Paspoli Municipal School in Powai (234.6 mm), Tagore Nagar Municipal School in Vikhroli (233.2 mm), Mithagar Municipal School in Mulund (226 mm), Andheri Fire Station (225.4 mm), F South Ward Office at Parel (222 mm) and G South Ward Office at Prabhadevi (220.4 mm). - PTI

Local train movement was affected due to water accumulation, though tracks were not submerged. Rail commuters said several local train services were running 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule, leading to overcrowding during the morning rush hour.

The BMC said a high tide of 4.27 metres is expected at 1.45 pm on Thursday, while the next high tide of 3.71 metres is due at 1.31 a.m. on Friday (July 3, 2026). A low tide of 1.82 metres is expected at 7.49 p.m. on Thursday.

A Central Railway spokesperson said that despite receiving more than 180 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, there was no major waterlogging on its network and local train services on all four corridors were operating normally, even as commuters complained of delays. - PTI

Mumbai woke up to another rain-soaked morning on Thursday (July 2, 2026) as heavy showers inundated low-lying areas, slowing road and rail traffic and showing little sign of easing, with the IMD forecasting more rainfall through the day.

Several areas logged more than 200 mm of rainfall over the last 24 hours, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Thane Mayor Sharmila Pimpalolkar has ordered a safety survey of dangerous trees across the city in the wake of the death of a student after a tree collapsed on a school bus in Mumbai during heavy rains.

Ms. Pimpalolkar convened an urgent meeting of the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Tree Authority Department on Wednesday (July 1, 2026) and directed officials to conduct inspections of trees inside schools, colleges, housing societies, hospitals, and along major traffic junctions.She also mandated a re-survey of previously pruned trees to re-verify their structural stability.

“Dangerous, dried or bent trees as well as large branches should be identified immediately and necessary action should be taken,” the mayor instructed, emphasising the need for inter-departmental coordination to pre-emptively mitigate risks.

She also ordered the immediate clearance of branches left on roadsides post-pruning to avoid traffic obstructions during the monsoon. People have been urged to report hazardous trees to the Thane Municipal Corporation immediately. - PTI

Several parts of the national capital received light to moderate rainfall on Thursday morning (July 2, 2026), bringing relief from the humid conditions and lowering the temperature across the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Delhi is likely to witness a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain during the day. It also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (July 3-July 5, 2026).

The minimum temperature was recorded at 22.8 degrees Celsius, 5.1 notches below the season’s average, according to the IMD. The maximum temperature is expected to settle around 33 degrees Celsius.

Intermittent showers accompanied by light winds were reported from several areas of the city during the morning, providing respite to residents after days of warm and humid weather.

The city’s air quality was recorded in the ‘satisfactory’ category, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) being at 100 at 9 a.m., according to the data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). - PTI

Mumbai witnessed extremely heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, with several parts of the city recording more than 150 millimetres of rain between 8.30 a.m. on July 1 and 8.30 a.m. on July 2, 2026. Juhu Airport received the highest rainfall at 205 millimetres, closely followed by Santacruz with 204.6 millimetres and Vikhroli with 192.5 millimetres. Heavy showers also lashed Bandra, Ram Mandir, Byculla, Chembur, Vidyavihar, Sion, and Colaba, highlighting the widespread intensity of the monsoon across Mumbai.
