Union Home Minister Amit Shah met U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor at his residence in Delhi on Thursday (June 18, 2026). The discussion centred around strengthening cooperation between the two countries on counterterrorism and counter-narcotics.
Mr. Gor is the third U.S Ambassador to have met Mr. Shah since he assumed charge as Home Minister for the first time in 2019. He had earlier met U.S. Ambassador Kenneth Juster in 2019 and Ambassador Eric Garcetti in 2023.
The meeting assumes significance as Mr. Shah rarely meets foreign delegates and Ministers, and it comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met U.S President Donald Trump in France during the G7 summit.
Mr. Shah last visited a foreign country in 2006 when as Gujarat’s Minister of Home he led a delegation to Germany.
In a post on X, Mr. Shah said, “Met U.S. Ambassador to India, Mr. Sergio Gor in New Delhi today. Had a detailed discussion on further strengthening cooperation between India and the U.S. in the area of security, particularly in counter-terrorism and counter-narcotics.”
“Under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi Ji, India is firmly committed to advancing the India–U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and ensuring that the people of both nations benefit from the bilateral relationship,” he added.
Mr. Gor was the first to announce the meeting on X. “Had an excellent meeting with Honorable Home Minister @AmitShah. We had a fruitful discussion on enhancing collaboration to combat terrorism, shield our people from narcotics and illicit drugs, secure our borders, and jointly bring criminals to justice in both nations,” he wrote.
This was followed by Mr. Shah’s post.
Hours before he met Mr. Shah in Delhi, Mr. Gor had met U.S President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in France. “Back in New Delhi after a great trip to the G7 in France. Lots of positive outcomes between the United States and India!” he said on X.
Earlier on June 2, Mr. Shah held a meeting with a Nepalese delegation led by Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party. In November 2022, he held bilateral meetings with Ministers of Nigeria and Ethiopia on the sidelines of No Money for Terror Conference held on the outskirts of Delhi.
