Fresh visuals emerge from Mankhurd showing the site of a ‘chawl’ collapse, which has left six, including five children dead. 

Traffic on both the Pune-Mumbai Expressway and the old Pune-Mumbai highway was suspended on Monday following heavy rainfall, flooding and landslide, police said.

The authorities appealed to citizens to avoid travelling between Pune and Mumbai until further orders, citing safety concerns.

Police said flood-like conditions had developed in parts of Maval and Tamhini Ghat, affecting alternate routes connecting Pune and Mumbai.

The University of Mumbai has postponed all examinations scheduled for July 6 after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a weather alert for Mumbai as a precautionary measure.

New dates for the exams will be announced soon.

This comes as the city has been battered by incessant rains and waterlogged areas in the last few days.

The university emphasised that the decision was taken while keeping the students’ safety in mind.

Traffic in both directions (Pune–Mumbai and Mumbai–Pune) has been stopped until further notice, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation said in a post on X. 

“Citizens are requested not to undertake any journey between Pune and Mumbai until further directions are issued. Those planning to travel are advised to postpone their journey and follow traffic advisories and updates issued by the Government agencies,” it added. 

As heavy rains continued to pound Mumbai on Sunday, an 18-year-old motorcyclist and a senior citizen lost their lives in tree-collapse incidents, pushing the death toll from such tragedies in the city to three in less than a week.

According to civic officials, a tree collapsed on a shop near the Hindi BMC School in the Naupada locality of Kurla West around 12.40 p.m.

The victim, Yunus Kundawala, was extricated from the debris and rushed to Fauzia Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, they said.

Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and also announced immediate financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh for the family of the deceased.

In a separate incident, an 18-year-old boy died after a tree branch fell on him while he was riding a motorcycle in the Aarey Colony area of Goregaon East.

The authorities have declared a holiday for all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Palghar on Monday as heavy downpours continue to lash the regions, officials said.

In Mumbai, where the India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’, the decision was taken keeping students’ safety in mind, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a release on Sunday evening.

Besides heavy rainfall, the IMD has also forecast gusty winds in the metropolis.

Government and private offices will function as usual, the release said, urging citizens to step out of their homes only if necessary.
