The southwest monsoon finally hit Mumbai on June 23, about 13 days after its normal onset date

Torrential overnight rains triggered a series of landslides that blocked the Gyalshing–Legship road at multiple places and cut off the battered West Sikkim district headquarters from the rest of the State. Gyalshing recorded a staggering 95.2 mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. Under the impact of the rains, tonnes of sludge and massive boulders came crashing onto the road, bringing traffic to a standstill.

District Magistrate Tenzing Denzongpa said they received reports of the landslides around 9 p.m. on Tuesday (June 23, 2026). The most severely affected landslide occurred near Omchung, about two kilometres from Gyalshing town, he said.

With the Gyalshing–Legship road blocked, excavators were pressed into service through the night as teams battled challenging conditions to clear the debris.

The sanitation worker associated with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) fell into an open drain in front of Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawade when she stepped out to inspect the on-ground situation. A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by a co-passenger inside a first-class compartment of a Mumbai local train during an argument over whether the doors should be kept open amid rains, officials said.

A manhunt has been launched to arrest the attacker, who is on the run, they said.

Victim Mayank Lohar was fatally assaulted on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), which also marked the arrival of monsoon in the city, between Andheri and Borivali railway stations in the western suburbs, they said.

The Assam government has issued a high alert after extremely heavy rainfall and flash floods were reported in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Subansiri district, potentially impacting several districts of Assam downstream.

According to information received from Guwahati’s Regional Meteorological Centre and the Meteorological Centre in Itanagar, Lower Subansiri’s Yazali recorded 72.8 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, mostly between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).

“The high volume of rainfall resulted in flash floods and a substantial increase in river discharge in the upper catchment areas,” an Assam government statement said.

Train movement on the Trans-Harbour line was resumed this morning following a brief operational snag caused by soil erosion beneath the tracks due to the recent downpour in the city. The rains, happening in spells since Tuesday (June 23, 2026) evening, have resulted in the cancellation of 24 trains and ongoing speed restrictions between Turbhe and Vashi.

Central Railway, in an official update, stated, “Due to a track damage incident at the Trans Harbour line of Mumbai Local, 24 trains have been cancelled till now. Though the traffic is resumed in the affected portion after repairing, speed is limited due to caution in the affected portion of the trans harbour line between Turbhe and Vash.”

The incident occurred amid heavy rain that lashed Mumbai on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) and Wednesday (June 24, 2026), causing widespread waterlogging in several low-lying areas and leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an Orange Alert for the region.

Incessant rain triggered flash floods in Keyi Panyor district of Arunachal Pradesh in the morning, inundating low-lying areas and damaging 18 residential units, while landslides on a national highway disrupted vehicular movement and left several people stranded, an official said.

Three people reportedly went missing due to the flash floods at the Neepco project colony near Poosa under the Yazali circle, State disaster management secretary Dani Sulu said.

An under-construction retaining wall collapsed due to the downpour, and a large amount of water inundated low-lying residential areas in and around the colony, he said.

A day after the monsoon’s onset in Mumbai, heavy overnight rain disrupted suburban train services, caused waterlogging in low‑lying areas, and left commuters stranded.

Parts of the metropolis recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8 a.m., officials said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in Mumbai and its suburbs over the next 24 hours.

After an intense overnight rainfall, Mumbai woke up to heavy downpour on Wednesday (June 24, 2026), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an Orange alert for the city and neighbouring districts, including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar.

IMD forecasted moderate to intense spells of rain for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar, and Sindhudurg. The city recorded of 195mm rainfall on June 24 at 8am from June 23 at 8 a.m., with eastern suburb receiving 167 mm and western suburb 208 mm.

Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra’s Thane and Palghar districts over the last 24 hours, triggering a landslide at the scenic Malshej Ghat and leading to dozens of complaints of tree falls, officials said.

A minor landslide was reported on Tuesday (June 23, 2026) evening along the vital Malshej Ghat stretch, which connects Thane and Pune districts, Thane’s Resident Deputy Collector Sandeep Mane said.

The incident occurred between the “wash point” and “umbrella point” at the ghat between 6 pm and 7 pm on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), according to district disaster management authorities.

Keeping passenger safety and uninterrupted train operations as its top priority, comprehensive monsoon preparedness measures have been taken across the network under the railway zone to effectively address seasonal challenges, South Western Railway has said in a release.

Under South Western Railway, the monsoon period for 2026 is observed from June 1 to October 31, while for select sections of Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions, the notified period extends from mid-August/early September to mid-November based on local weather conditions.

During this time, extensive precautionary protocols are in place to ensure safe and reliable train operations, the release said.
