The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked SpiceJet to move the Delhi High Court for an extension of time to deposit ₹144 crore in connection with a dispute with media baron Kalanithi Maran and Kal Airways.

Appearing before a Bench of Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, counsel for Spicejet, said the West Asia crisis had impacted the airline’s operations and finances. Mr. Rohatgi sought three months time to deposit the amount.

The counsel appearing for Kal Airways vehemently opposed the extension of time, saying a review cannot be allowed in guise of an appeal. The High Court had on May 4 dismissed pleas moved by SpiceJet and its promoter Ajay Singh for a review of an earlier order to the airline to deposit ₹144 crore in connection with its dispute with Mr. Maran and Kal Airways.

On January 19, the airline was directed to deposit ₹144 crore with the registry within six weeks against an admitted liability of ₹194 crore, pursuant to an arbitration award against them in their dispute with Mr. Maran.
