Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti has directed the chief officers of urban local bodies to take steps necessary for the proper management of solid waste generated in the cities.

In a meeting with officers on the implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules-2026 in Shivamogga on Friday, the DC said earlier the urban local bodies handled the solid waste at three steps of segregation – dry, wet and domestic hazardous waste. The revised rules mandated four-stream segregation – wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste that included batteries, bulbs, medicines, pesticides, heavy metals, among others.

The DC suggested the urban local bodies ensure the high-waste generators like apartment complexes, hotels and commercial complexes process wet waste within their premises and segregate the waste at their place. The officer also raised the issue of littering plastic water bottles at trekking spots and scenic areas in the district. He directed the local bodies to ensure proper disposal of the waste and explore banning carrying the plastic bottles to such places.

District Urban Development Cell project director Rangaswamy, environment officer Shilpa and officers from the urban local bodies were present at the meeting.
